Farming for Conservation
in the Burren

Steps involved

The Dept of Agriculture and Food, who sponsor the BFCP, are responsible for the allocation of places to the BFCP. An initial call for applications was issued in April 2010. Further calls will be made depending on available budget and will be advertised in local media and on this website.

The steps involved in entering the BFCP are:

  • Submit an application to the Department of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries (DAFF).
  • Await notification from DAFF.
  • If your application is successful attend the introductory farmer training course.
  • On completion of the course, contact one of the BFCP approved farm advisors.
  • Work with the farm advisors to develop your BFCP farm plan.
  • Submit your farm plan to DAFF for approval.
  • Once approval has been received, proceed with farm works.
  • When carrying out works farmers must ensure that cross compliance requirements are fully met.

Payments under the BFCP will be based on two main factors-
1. the extent and condition of the designated habitats and other non-designated Annex I habitats on the farm,
2. the satisfactory completion by the farmer of a range of recommended site enhancement works.

The maximum amount that will be payable to any farmer under the BFCP is €15,000 per annum.
